A beginner’s guide to Super Mario Run

Super Mario Run is upon us. In this beginner’s guide we will teach you basics of new Nintendo’s mobile biggest foray into mobile gaming. Currently game is only available on Apple iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad (Android version coming in 2017).

IS MARIO SUPER MARIO FREE TO PLAY?

Yes and no. You can download game for free from the iTunes, but you get a demo of first three levels. Unlocking all other levels requires a one time in game purchase of 9,99$.

WHY DO I NEED AN ACTIVE INTERNET CONNECTION TO PLAY?

Good question! This is whate Nintendo published recently on that topic:

Online connectivity allows us to offer a variety of features and services that enhance the play experience. Super Mario Run is not a static experience, but rather one that players can continue to return to again and again to enjoy something new and unexpected. For example, online connectivity can offer the following:

Access to other users’ play data and scores for automatically generated Toad Rally challenges.

In-game events that will offer players new challenges and rewards for a limited time.

Linkage to Nintendo Account to access save data from multiple devices. For example, if players have Super Mario Run on their iPhone and iPad, they can share one save file across the different devices. However, this save data cannot be used with different devices at the same time.

WHAT CAN I DO IN SUPER MARIO RUN?

You can participate in three different types of game play: World Tour, Toad Rally and Kingdom Builder.

WORLD TOUR

Your goal is to get from the start of the level at the left to the end of the level on the right, where you’ll find the iconic flagpole just like in classic Super Mario games.

If you aim to get a perfect score (100% collected coins) on every level, you’ll need to replay every level at least three times before you complete it. Some players may get a perfect score in just one run, but the rest of us will need a few attempts.

You collect types of Coins on every Level:

  • standard Gold Coins
  • pink Challenge Coins

You can collect five Challenge Coins on every level. Collecting all five of these will unlock the black Challenge Coins.

Completing World Tour levels earns you Rally Tickets that you can use to access Toad Rally mode.

TOAD RALLY

Toad Rally is the multiplayer component of Super Mario Run: this is where you compete against other players, or at least their ghost version. Every player run in Toad Rally gets recorded as a ghost run and other players compete against it.

Pulling off cool jumps will earn you a crowd of toad fans, the number of which factors in to your final score. Remember, the race isn’t solely about the fastest time!

Filling a Star meter with style points will unlock a Coin Rush, filling your path with tons of Coins to collect. Coin Rush makes Toad Rally the best place to farm Coins in the current meta.

KINGDOM BUILDER

Kingdom Builder enables you to create your own little corner of the Mushroom Kingdom. Spend the coins you collect in the World Tour and Toad Rally levels to buy buildings and decorations. Some of these are just for appearances, while others unlock the other playable characters or bonus games.

Check out our Kingdom Builder guide for more details.

HOW DO I CONTROL A MARIO GAME JUST WITH ONE HAND?

Controls in Super Mario Run are very simple, as Mario runs right on it’s own. Fortunately, you can still control Mario with advanced moves like Wall Jumping and Slide.

JUMPING

You can just tap screen to jump or tap longer for longer jump.

Even Mario automatically vaults over small enemies, low obstacles and small gaps.

WALL JUMPING

When Mario jumps onto a wall, you can tap to jump again and reverse direction.

You can string wall jumps together to climb. This is also a good way to change direction and backtrack a little if you missed something nearby.

SLIDING

When Mario lands on slope it triggers Mario to slide down whit his butt and doing that will automatically kills enemies , earning you few extra coins also it gives you small speed boots to help you reach otherwise unreachable areas.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL BLOCKS OR POWER-UPS?

Glad you asked! There are several powerups and special blocks like Arrow Blocks, Bubbles, Pause Blocks, Super Mushrooms and good old Stars.

ARROW BLOCKS

The dashed-outline blocks with arrows in them spawn a few coins in the direction of the arrow. There are also arrow blocks on the ground that change the direction of your jump if you jump on them.

SUPER MUSHROOMS

Like in the old days of Super Mario collecting Mushrooms and also you get ability to break brick blocks.

BUBBLES

You collect bubbles throughout the levels and using a bubble floats you backward in the level a little bit to try again sections you passed.

PAUSE BLOCKS

Red blocks with the pause icon stops Mario movement for few seconds giveing you time to think and decide what to do next.

STARS

Do you remember good old stars? We do! It gives you same invulnerability but with vacuum effect that collects coins for you.

ARE THERE MORE THEN ONE PLAYABLE CHARACTER IN GAME?

Character Description
Mario Mario is your starting character, his name is in the title, so it makes sense.
Luigi Luigi has a bit higher jump than Mario, but is still the less cool brother. You can unlock Luigi by building a house for him in Kingdom Builder.
Peach Don’t think Super Mario Run is just for boys. Princess Peach is along for the ride, too.
Toad Toad can run fast, and that’s about it. He might be the worst. To get Toad sign into your My Nintendo account to unlock it.
Toadette Its lady toad. You can tell because she has braids.
Yoshi Giving you a little bit extra after jumping Yoshi brings his standard flutter jump to the game.
